Why does how we think have such a big influence on the results we achieve? We all have ambitions and desires; however, at times we may find ourselves delaying or avoiding the effort required. Our mindset matters! If our default mindset aligns with that of our ancient ancestors, it is likely set to keep us safe. This can be useful in some situations; however, we need to realize that safe doesn’t necessarily equate to happiness or success. In order to achieve success, we often need to step outside of our comfort zone, face our fears and take the uncomfortable actions necessary in order to progress.
There are several ways our mindset influences our behaviour:
Impact of our Inner Voice – The stories we tell ourselves influences how we show up each day. If we allow our inner voice to cast self-doubt and weaken our self-esteem, we’re less likely to step out from our comfort zone and take action. With a healthier inner voice and through practicing positive self-talk, we can strengthen our commitment to making progress and attaining desired results.
Attitude – Taking on daily challenges with a positive attitude can increase our commitment to making things happen. It doesn’t mean that we don’t recognize challenges or difficult situations for what they are, however approaching them with an optimistic and constructive outlook can better align our response to produce progress in the right direction.
Approach to Progress – Whether you dwell on how far away you are from achieving your goals or if you focus on the incremental advances you are achieving, can be the difference between stifling or building momentum. Focusing on the distance that still needs to be traveled can lead to discouragement and despair. Concentrating on what’s within our control and our next best step is a better use of our effort. Establishing a mindset focused on progress and stacking up small wins is a more favourable path towards achieving a goal.
Dealing with Turbulence – There are likely going to be bumps in the road on the journey towards success. How we deal with the turbulence can make all the difference. If we allow setbacks to derail us, leaving us feeling discouraged and wanting to give up, our desired outcomes will remain out of reach. If we can recognize the difficulties we face as opportunities for growth and learning, we can leverage the experiences and our perseverance to strengthen our commitment to making it happen!
Perspective – Any situation can be experienced through a variety of viewpoints. If we approach situations only with the awareness of our own perception, we can miss out on so many cues. These cues could be the difference needed to help guide our progress and improve our impact. Having a multi-perspective mindset, where we increase our awareness of other possibilities, provides us with the ability to re-calibrate our understanding of any given situation and take the necessary actions that are best aligned with the results we desire to attain.
I believe Tony Robins said it best, “Where focus goes, energy flows”. If you can maintain a constructive mindset, be your greatest fan rather than critic, you are more likely to take that next best step. Approaching life’s challenges as a means of continuous improvement and stack the small wins will improve your chances of attaining your desired outcomes. The thoughts we manifest play a key role in guiding our actions and the outcomes that follow!
So think it, believe it and make it happen!
